Basil - One of the most popular herbs. Great for Mediterranean dishes, it in-parts a mild aniseed flavour to salads and soups, wonderful with tomatoes. Half hardy annual. In cooking add a few leaves at the last minute to retain flavour.

Chives - The mild onion flavour is ideal in salads or added to dairy sauces and in all types of egg and cheese dishes. Hardy perennial. Allow a few plants to flower and use the pretty heads in salads.

Coriander - The leaves of this popular, fragrant herb that are delicious chopped in curries and chutneys or used whole in salad or as a garnish. Hardy annual. Pick a few leaves from several different plants each time. they will then regrow more quickly.

Dill - Both the feathery leaves and seeds can be used to flavour fish , potatoes, sauces and mustard. The seeds can be used in pickling stews. Hardy annual. Pick ripe heads when light brown, after drying shake out the seeds and store in an airtight container.

Mustard White - Versatile and easy to grow. Sow all year round indoors, use it on its own or with cress as a garnish, or add flavour and spice and salads. Sow 3/4 days after cress if required together. Sow outdoors in summer for hotter larger leaves.

Parsley Moss Curled 2 - Use with salads, add fish and egg dishes. The dark green leaves are rich in vitamin C and Iron. Hardy perennial. Parsley is one of the most popular and versatile herbs - it tastes great in parsley sauce with gammon or fish and it is rich in beneficial folic acid.

Parsley Plain Leaved 2 - Also known as 'Italian Parsley' it is said to have the best flavour of all. Rich in vitamins and great for soups, sauces and salads. Hardy Perennial. Surplus Parsley leaves can be dried but better flavour is retained by freezing.

Sage - An evergreen shrub, sage leaves can be picked all year round. Fresh leaves are always available for stuffings, sauces and as a counterpart to fatty meats. Hardy shrub. Trim plants regularly to keep them tidy and encourage new leaves.

Thyme - The deliciously aromatic leaves are a a wonderful accompaniment to numerous meat and vegetable dishes. Often evergreen, it also makes a beautiful edging and container plants. Hardy shrub. Cloche protecting in autumn will give longer cropping.

  • Indoors - Place on pots of moist compost
  • Cover with clear glass, polythene or a propagator lid
  • Keep at approx. 15/20 and keep moist
  • Remove cover when seedlings appear
  • When large enough plant apart in trays
  • Stand outside for a few days (avoid frosts)
  • Transplant in final position in a sunny spot with well drained soil
