JBA Seed Potatoes - Desiree - Maincrop

A firm favourite in many kitchens, the Desiree variety of seed potato produces delightful oval shaped tubers, with a red skin and pale yellow flesh. Once cooked, the potato has a firm texture, making it a great choice for roast potatoes and for boiling.

Although drought resistant, Desiree potatoes are susceptible to some potato diseases and can sometimes become misshapen in heavier soils. If planted in March, this main crop variety can be harvested in the late summer months, allowing you to enjoy your home-grown potatoes in salads.

Key Information:

  • Oval, red skinned tubers
  • Pale yellow flesh which turns firm once cooked
  • Resistant to drought, but susceptible to some potato diseases

Advice & Tips:

  • Soon after purchasing, empty the seed potatoes into a shallow box, such as an egg box, and store them in a cool area protected from frost.
  • Two weeks before planting out, move the seed potatoes to a light area so that they can produce a strong, thick sprout - make sure they are rose eye upwards. When exposed to light, the potatoes will turn green - this is normal.
  • When planted into the ground, each potato should be approximately 25cm from the next, with rows spaced approximately 60cm apart. The potatoes should be approximately 15cm into the ground.

Useful Information:

When to sow: March - April
When to Harvest: August - September
Culinary Use: Excellent for Boiling, Baking and in Salads, also good for Roasting, Chipping and Mashing
