JBA Seed Potatoes - Maris Peer - Second Early

Maris Peer seed potatoes produce a slightly smaller tuber compared to other second early varieties, which makes it a great choice if you're looking for late summer baby potatoes which will hold their colour and shape once cooked. They have good resistance to many potato skin diseases, making them a popular variety for 'grow your own' gardeners.

You don't need a large space to grow Maris Peer potatoes; this variety can be grown in containers and even produce lightly scented purple flowers as it grows. The oval-shaped, white skinned tubers can be harvested in July if planted in March, or can be planted late for a Christmas harvest if preferred.

Key Information:

  • Oval shaped with a cream coloured flesh and white skin
  • Good resistance to potato skin diseases
  • Can be planted in August and harvested in time for Christmas

Advice & Tips:

  • Dig over the area you wish to plant your potatoes, removing any weeds.
  • Create shallow ridges in the ground approximately 60cm apart, planting the seed potatoes into the ridge approximately 12cm deep and 22cm apart.
  • When the plants have grown to approximately 20cm in height, draw soil up around the lower leaves to protect the newly forming potatoes
  • For an earlier harvest, potatoes can be chitted before planting - to do this, place the seed potatoes into an open container, such as an egg box, and leave in a light and airy position, protected from frost, to allow the potatoes to grow small shoots. Be careful not to damage the chits when planting into the ground.

Useful Information:

When to sow: March - April, or in August
When to Harvest: June - July if planted in March, or just before Christmas if planted in August
Culinary Use: Excellent for Boiling, Baking and in Salads. Can also be used for Roasting, Chipping and Mashing.
