Vitax Biodegradable Grow Tubes
20 round tubes x 6cm
These round growing tubes are the perfect, plastic-free way to grow sweet peas, beans, leeks and tap-rooted plants from seed.
Made from natural, biodegradable materials they can be used for cuttings and seedlings which require planting out. Minimise root disturbance by planting out in the pot.
Each pack contains 20 of 6cm tubes. If white mould appears on the Grow Tube separate the tubes by 25mm to allow the air to circulate between to dry out the tubes.
Plants are ready for planting out when roots begin to grow through the sides. Once this happens, simply transfer straight into the ground and water thoroughly. The rim of the tube will also act as a deterrent for pests.
Key Information:
Instructions for use:
Filling: Stand the tubes in a tray or box & half fill with good quality seed & potting compost. Firm gently & continue filling to within 2.5cm of the rim. Tie string around the top of the tubes to keep them upright in the tray.
Sowing Seeds: Sow one seed into the centre of the tube & cover lightly with a little compost. In the greenhouse capillary matting can be used to help maintain a constant moisture level.
Watering: After sowing, water thoroughly & allow to drain. Keep the soil moist, but not over-wet. Tubes will last for about 12 weeks during which time the roots of the plant will penetrate the wall of the tubes. If white mould appears on the side of the tube separate the tubes by 25mm to allow air to circulate & dry the tubes.
Planting Out: Plants are ready for planting out when roots begin to grow through the base of the tube. Do not remove the tube. Make a hole & position the tube with the rim 2.5cm above the surrounding soil. Firm into position & water thoroughly. The rim of the tube deters pests & acts as a funnel, channeling water directly to the roots. Do not allow the area to dry out during the first few days after planting. When planting sweet peas insert a large cane beside each plant. Tie the plants to the cane & remove the tendril as the plant grows to encourage flowering. Runner beans will support themselves around the cane. Sow beans & sweet peas in March & keep warm until the danger of frost has passed. For early sweet peas sow in Oct/Nov, grow in a cold frame through the winter & harden off in the spring.
