This plant has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant.
Planting | Well-drained soils. Soak the rootball before planting. Plant in a hole twice the diameter of the rootball or pot. Mix an organic soil improver and general fertiliser with the infill soil. Plant 45cm away from walls and trees. Water carefully until established. |

Flowering | Sumptuous reddish-purple foliage, turning crimson in autumn. Self-supporting climber bearing bunches of blue-black grapes. |
Height | 4-5m x 4-5m in 10 years. |
Pruning | Support may be needed. In restricted space, train to framework and prune new growth to one or two buds in mid-winter. |
